Baltimore Orioles Baseball Team

Situation:
The Baltimore Orioles major league baseball team had held their Spring Training at an aging and antiquated Fort Lauderdale Baseball Stadium for the past nine years. In order for the Orioles to continue playing (and attracting tourists) at their Spring home, they would need more than $40 million in renovations to the city-owned stadium. Facing obstacles in gaining funding for the public-owned stadium, the Orioles turned to Malkus Communications Group to shed light on the benefits associated with tourism dollars every spring.

Solution:
Create positive interaction with local hoteliers, tourism businesses and elected officials through one-on-one meetings. Generate positive news coverage on the benefits of an expanded new stadium which would evolve as a multi-use facility to attract additional sports and entertainment events.

To achieve these goals, Malkus Communications Group initiated positive news stories on the renovation and expansion of the Stadium in addition to a unique marketing partnership between the Orioles and Broward County tourism officials that would result in publicity and promotions in the coveted Northeast United States market.  The news reports touted the benefits of a new, revitalized Stadium that would serve community groups in addition to strengthening the spring destination of Greater Fort Lauderdale.


Results:
The 50-year old Fort Lauderdale Baseball Stadium received approval for City and County funding totaling more that $38 million.  Positive reports appeared in television, radio and newspaper stories with 4.2 million branded media impressions based on circulation. And, as the Stadium moves forward as a new entertainment destination, Malkus Communications will continue to help the Baltimore Orioles and local officials attract world-class events.
